Napoli in for Gonalons but reject Mascherano talk

The Serie A club look set to be active in the January transfer window despite bringing in a host of players over the summer

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed the club are interested in Lyon's Maxime Gonalons but rejected talk of a move for Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Rafael Benitez is expected to make further additions to his Napoli squad in January on the back of a flurry of summer transfer activity as he strives to win honours in his first season at the club.

Argentina international Mascherano was a key player for the Spaniard during his time at Liverpool, while Gonalons, 24, has impressed with a string of fine displays for Lyon.

"We are not interested in Mascherano and we are not looking to get him," De Laurentiis told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Gonalons, instead, has the profile of a player we might like," he added.

Napoli, who have taken 22 points from a possible 27 in their opening nine games, are currently sat second in the Serie A, five points behind league leaders Roma.
