Abidal hospitalised after taking outdated medicine
The Monaco captain had a scare but has moved to reassure fans that he will be back in training shortly
A representative of Monaco centre-back Eric Abidal has confirmed that the 34-year-old is in hospital in the Principality after ingesting “outdated medication”.

Abidal missed last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Saint-Etienne due to flu-like symptoms and it is believed that it was while trying to eradicate these that he took the drug.

The former Barcelona player, who had to have a liver transplant in 2012 after a second cancer scare, is due to be released from hospital on Wednesday, and expects to return to training immediately.

Monaco’s captain, who had been overlooked by France boss Didier Deschamps for Wednesday’s international friendly against the Netherlands, has already thanked fans for messages of support via his Twitter account.

"Thanks for the messages. Returning to La Turbie for training tomorrow," he wrote.

The club have since responded with an official statement.

"Following a seasonal viral infection, given his medical background and Eric Abidal was hospitalised as a precaution for 48 hours. Today, his very satisfactory results allows him to be considered for release tomorrow and training resumed at the next appropriate meeting in La Turbie."

Monaco are scheduled to play Sochaux on Saturday afternoon, and as yet their captain's participation is in question.
