It’s understood United are also keen on Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi, with Spanish newspaper Marca reporting the player has refused to return to his club until a move is sanctioned to Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old is highly rated by United’s hierarchy and it’s understood Louis Van Gaal may try to push a deal over the line, with a move for Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos looking increasingly unlikely.
Marca described Otamendi as a ‘rebel’ before going on to reveal the player is refusing to return to training as requested on July 27.
They also stated that the Argentinian has instructed his family to tie up any loose ends he has left in the city.
The signing of such an experienced player who has impressed in La Liga in recent seasons would be a welcome addition for most United fans.
It had previously been reported that the Premier League giants had given Portuguese super-agent Jorge Mendes a set of instructions to broker a deal with Valencia.
However it remains unclear whether the Spanish side would be willing to sell such an important player.
