Wenger: Arsenal are active but not close to a new signing
The Gunners are targeting the likes of Schalke forward Julian Draxler and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi and the Frenchman is adamant that "anything can happen"

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that he remains "active" in the January transfer window but denies that the club are "close" to securing a new signing.

SportGiggs exclusively revealed on Sunday that the Gunners planned to send officials to Germany with a view to discussing a deal with Schalke for star man Julian Draxler, while the north Londoners are also keen on a deal for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace, Wenger conceded that the club were not on the verge of announcing a new arrival but insisted that that "anything can happen" before deadline day on Friday night.

He told the club's official website: "Are we active? Yes. Are we close to sign anybody? No.

"There's not long now that's true. First, the situation was going like always in a transfer market - week by week. In the last two weeks it goes day by day, now it goes hour by hour.

"In any hour anything can happen or change but at the moment, unfortunately, we are not signing anybody."
